Tray Czech Republic
Tray Czech Republic from design studio Qubus. The bowl originally named “Heimweh” (longing for home) was included in Maxim Velčovský’s diploma thesis. This tray is a unique souvenir in the shape of the Czech Republic, loosely following the work of the Finnish designer Alvar Aalto and his series of organic glass vases from the 1930s. This series has literally become a symbol of Finnish national identity. Its clean shape did not provide space for the placement of any object, so that the overall impression would not change. It often remained empty and functions more like a design piece of free art. Velčovský, on the other hand, opted for a specific topographical abstraction, which although directly refers to Czech statehood, remains incomprehensible to those who are not familiar with the topic.
