Because of the housing crisis, young people from the middle class lack the permanent housing that generations before them owned. For these modern urban nomads, I am therefore designing a collection of “bags” that will help them relocate and become their imaginary snail shell. I use embroidery to give a rectangle of fabric the volume that was used in folk culture to carry things, but also strength in the joints. Embroidery, which here ironically critiques rental housing, is not a decoration but a functional structural element and a carrier of meaning. The result is four products: a shopping bag, a raincoat, an apron and a loom. All can be easily packed into a backpack or unfolded for storage.
